What is Macromedia Flash Lite?Macromedia Flash Lite is a new profile of Macromedia Flash Player that is designed specifically for mobile phones. This new profile was needed because mass-market phones do not have sufficient processing power and memory to support the entire Flash Player 7 feature set while supporting unique requirements such as network connectivity. The Macromedia Mobile and Devices team continues to create profiles for key device categories such as interactive television set top boxes, PDAs, and mobile phones.
What are the new features in Flash Lite 1.1?The new version supports the W3C standard SVG Tiny (SVG-T), network connectivity, improved audio support, and extensions to integrate Flash content with phone-specific features such as monitoring battery life or sending SMS messages.
What is FlashCast? How does it work with Flash Lite?FlashCast is an exciting new service platform that enables channels of content to be delivered to consumer handsets. The FlashCast system uses Flash Lite to render channels in the phone. More details about FlashCast will be made available later in the year.
Is Flash Lite 1.1 compatible with Flash 7?The desktop version of Flash Player, Flash 7, requires more processing power and memory than typical mobile phones. Flash Lite is a profile specifically created for mobile phones. Content developed for Flash Lite is compatible with Flash Player 7 on the desktop, but Flash 7 content does not necessarily run on Flash Lite.
What market segments need Flash Lite 1.1?Wireless operators and handset manufacturers are the primary audiences for Flash Lite 1.1. Either segment will benefit from enabling a new generation of Flash-based content, building rich interfaces for mobile phones, and delivering new, rich services built in Flash Lite 1.1.
How many Flash developers are there? There are more than 750,000 Flash developers around the world.
What other types of devices use Flash?Flash is being used in a variety of devices ranging from televisions to toys to factory automation systems. Macromedia is particularly focused on mobile phones because of the opportunity to enrich the mobile experience for over a billion consumers around the world. We have customers and partners building all kinds of consumer electronics. In the future, any device with a screen might be a home for Flash.
Are there currently any phones on the market that support Flash Player?Yes. Macromedia Flash technology is embedded into all new NTT DoCoMo i-mode handsets. The first handsets became available in Japan in May, 2003. There are six models in the original 505i series that have been subsequently followed by the 505iS, 506i, and 900i series handsets. There are now over 20 Flash-enabled handset models available to Japanese consumers.
Pricing and Availability What operators is Macromedia working with?We cannot comment on specific relationships outside of those already announced. However, we are working with operators around the world to provide Flash-enabled phones and services.

When will Flash-enabled phones be available in my country?Macromedia is helping operators and OEMs deliver new content on Flash devices. Specific availability and timeline are determined by local service providers. Ask your service provider if there are any available handsets that support Flash.
How is Flash Lite priced?Flash Lite is licensed on a per-unit royalty basis for each phone that utilizes the engine. Interested operators or OEMs should use the licensing form to contact Macromedia for further information.
What does the deal between DoCoMo and Macromedia entail?NTT DoCoMo and Macromedia announced an agreement to deliver Macromedia Flash technology jointly to i-mode, DoCoMo's proprietary 2G/3G mobile Internet platform in Japan. The technology is embedded in the new i-mode handsets, starting with the 505i series that shipped in May, 2003. Since the release of the first two DoCoMo cell phone models, the 505i series has enjoyed brisk sales. DoCoMo has sold 100,000 units of the D505i (Mitsubishi) and 40,000 units of the SO505i (Sony) so far. An additional four handset models will ship over the coming two months.
Is NTT DoCoMo adopting 1.1?NTT DoCoMo will use Flash Lite 1.1 for future phones. However, specific details have not been announced.
How many phones has NTT DoCoMo shipped?NTT DoCoMo does not publicly announce specific volumes for Flash-enabled i-mode handsets. However, it is clear that the relationship has been very successful. Millions of Flash-enabled phones have shipped, thousands of i-mode pages now present Flash content, and consumers can choose from over 20 models of different handsets.
Developer Information Which version of the authoring tool is needed?Developers need Flash MX Professional 2004, which includes templates, design guidelines, and a Flash Lite emulator. This enables developers to use a single tool to publish for the web, devices, and mobile phones.
What is the Macromedia Flash Player SDK?The Macromedia Flash Player SDK has been licensed to the world's leading technology platform companies and consumer electronics manufacturers. These licensees have integrated Flash technology into numerous products ranging from digital television set-top boxes to PDAs to educational toys. The SDK opens up a magnitude of rich content already available on the web and powers innovative user interfaces that can make any product more accessible and engaging to consumers. By leveraging the growing Flash ecosystem, SDK licensees have the technology, tools, and community to accelerate their product development efforts.
Will developers be able to create content for Flash Player 7 that will run on mobile phones?Yes, but with some caveats. Because many devices do not have the memory or processing power necessary to support Flash Player 7, many features may not be compatible. Different devices will support different versions of Flash, just as different desktops will have different versions of Flash for some time. Mobile phones will support Flash Lite. Please see the relevant platform information at www.macromedia.com/devnet/devices/.
Where can a developer find more information about authoring for Flash Lite? The Mobile and Devices section of the Developer Center is the best available resource. It contains articles, tutorials, and Content Development Kits for Flash Lite 1.1 and specific services such as the i-mode service.
Why did Macromedia decide to incorporate SVG-T support?Adding SVG-T support was a direct request from our European customers and is part of the 3GPP standard. Macromedia is committed to supporting industry standards and is ensuring that our technologies do so as well.
Does Flash MX 2004 support SVG-T?Macromedia has not announced support for SVG-T in either version of the authoring tool, Flash MX or Flash MX Professional. As Macromedia continues to build products that address customer requests and feedback, we welcome additional feedback from our present and new customers. To date, the Mobile and Devices team has received minimal interest in authoring for SVG-T.
How compliant is Flash Lite 1.1 with the SVG-T specification?Macromedia validated the SVG-T support in Flash Lite 1.1 by using all of the conformance tests provided by the W3C. From that base of tests, Flash Lite 1.1's SVG-T support is 100% compliant with the specification. Macromedia has additionally conducted numerous tests above and beyond the W3C conformance tests to improve further the coverage and performance of Macromedia's implementation of SVG-T. The complete Flash Lite verification suite consists of well over 1000 individual tests designed to exceed the quality requirements of our OEM and operator licensees.
Customer Support Will a download be available from Macromedia's website? No. Flash lite is licensed directly to handset manufacturers and wireless operators. Macromedia works with these companies to implement Flash Lite on their devices directly. Purchasing a phone with Flash Lite built into the device is currently the only option for consumers.
What browsers does Flash Lite work with?Flash Lite is integrated with various browsers embedded in mobile phones. Licensees have already integrated the Flash Player SDK with browsers from Access, Opera, Espial, Ant, Microsoft, and OpenTV. However, Flash Lite is more powerful than just a browser plug-in. OEM licensees are building entire interfaces as well as applications and services outside of the browser that utilize Flash Lite.
Will there be devices that support Flash Player 7?Absolutely. The Macromedia Flash Player SDK will be updated and distributed to all current and new licensees. Macromedia has not yet announced any specific timing for this update. Because of the significant new features and performance optimizations, many OEMs that use Flash Player today are likely to upgrade to Flash Player 7. Because most devices do not support software upgrades, only newly shipped products are likely to support the latest versions of Flash Player.
How much content is available for Flash Lite?Thousands of pieces of content have been created for NTT DoCoMo's i-mode service. Additionally, millions of pieces originally created for the web can be repurposed for mobile phones. As the availability of Flash Lite–enabled handsets increases, there will be ever-growing deployment of Flash content for mobile phones.
