About This Document
Some Background on User Interfaces - In order to understand the issues surrounding user interfaces, it helps to understand what, exactly, a user interface is, and how they've evolved to the point they're at today.
The Process of User Interface Design - User interface design is one part of the process of application design. The best user interface in the world won't be well accepted if the application it supports is not well designed.
Concepts of User Interface Design - It requires more than graphic design skills to create quality user interfaces. The concepts that underlie user interface design are more akin to cognitive ergonomics.
User Interface Design Elements - There are many basic building blocks that can be used in user interfaces.
Designing the User Interface - It can be difficult to stare at a blank page and decide how the user interface should be designed. It is always good to start with the primary goals of the user interface, and determine what tasks will accomplish those goals.

About This Document
This document is intended to be an introduction to the issues involved in designing user interfaces. It draws heavily on material that is already in existence (noted in the bibliography ) and is a summarization and synthesis of those resources. This document is not intended to be the definitive word on user interface design, nor is it a "how to" manual that will lead the reader step by step to a quality user interface design. It does, however, present an overview of general issues that are involved in user interface design and the process of designing user interfaces.
Most of the graphics used in this document were taken from the Macintosh. This is only because the author had direct access to Macintosh user interface elements. The concepts discussed herein are equally applicable to Macintosh, Windows, or any other environment.
